For enhanced safety, the front and rear seat shoulder belts of the Porsche Taycan have pretensioners to tighten the seatbelts and eliminate dangerous slack in the event of a collision. The BMW iX doesn’t offer pretensioners for its rear seat belts.

For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Porsche Taycan are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The BMW iX doesn’t offer height-adjustable seat belts.

A passive infrared night vision system optional on the Taycan helps the driver to more easily detect people, animals or other objects in front of the vehicle at night. Using an infrared camera to detect heat, the system then displays the image on a monitor in the dashboard. The iX doesn’t offer a night vision system.

Both the Taycan and the iX have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front and rear side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras, available blind spot warning systems and around view monitors.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2023 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Porsche vehicles are better in initial quality than BMW vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Porsche above average in initial quality. With 25 more problems per 100 vehicles, BMW is rated lower.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Porsche vehicles are more reliable than BMW vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Porsche above average in long-term dependability. With 30 more problems per 100 vehicles in the first three years of ownership, BMW is rated lower.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2024 Auto Issue reports that Porsche vehicles are more reliable than BMW vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Porsche 1 place higher in reliability than BMW.

The Taycan Turbo S’ electric motors produces 140 more horsepower (750 vs. 610) and 25 lbs.-ft. more torque (774 vs. 749) than the iX M60’s optional electric motors.

As tested in Car and Driver the Taycan 4S Performance Plus/Cross Turismo electric motors is faster than the iX xDrive50:

For better stopping power the Taycan’s brake rotors are larger than those on the iX:

The Taycan offers optional heat-treated ceramic brake rotors, which last ten to twenty times as long as conventional cast iron rotors, don’t rust, don’t fade during repeated high speed braking, and their lighter weight contribute to better braking, handling and acceleration. The iX doesn’t offer ceramic brake rotors.

The Taycan stops much shorter than the iX:

For better traction and acceleration, the Taycan has larger standard rear tires than the iX (275/45R19 vs. 235/60R20). The Taycan’s optional rear tires are larger than the largest rear tires available on the iX (305/30R21 vs. 275/40R22).

The Taycan’s standard 225/55R19 front and 275/45R19 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 55 series front and 45 series rear profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the iX’s standard 60 series tires. The Taycan’s optional 265/35R21 front and 305/30R21 rear tires have a lower 35 series front and 30 series rear profile than the iX’s optional 40 series tires.

The Taycan offers active sway bars, which help keep it flat and controlled during cornering, but disconnect at lower speeds to smooth the ride and offer greater off-road suspension articulation. This helps keep the tires glued to the road on-road and off. The iX doesn’t offer an active sway bar system.

The Taycan offers an available adjustable active suspension system, which counteracts cornering forces actively, limiting body roll and improving handling and stability. BMW doesn’t offer an active suspension on the iX.

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the Taycan is 1.1 inches wider in the front than the track on the iX.

The Taycan 4S Cross Turismo handles at .88 G’s, while the iX xDrive50 pulls only .84 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The Taycan Cross Turismo 4 executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.2 seconds quicker than the iX xDrive50 (25 seconds @ .76 average G’s vs. 26.2 seconds @ .71 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the Taycan Cross Turismo’s turning circle is 1 foot tighter than the iX xDrive50’s (39.4 feet vs. 40.4 feet).

The Porsche Taycan may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 550 to 1100 pounds less than the BMW iX.

The Taycan is 12.5 inches shorter in height than the iX, making the Taycan much easier to wash and garage and drive (lower center of gravity).

A low lift-over trunk design makes loading and unloading the Taycan easier. The Taycan’s trunk lift-over height is 27.5 inches, while the iX’s liftover is 30.3 inches.

A standard locking glovebox (which can’t be accessed with the valet key) keeps your small valuables safer in the Taycan. The iX doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.

The Taycan has a much higher standard payload capacity than the iX (1331 vs. 1003 lbs.).

The Taycan has a much higher maximum payload capacity than the iX (1596 vs. 1054 lbs.).

J.D. Power and Associates surveys of service recipients show that Porsche service is better than BMW. J.D. Power ranks Porsche third in service department satisfaction. With a 13% lower rating, BMW is ranked 7th.

Unlike the driver-only memory system in the iX, the Taycan offers an optional driver and passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat, steering wheel position, outside mirror angle, climate settings and radio stations and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The Porsche Taycan comes in sedan and station wagon bodystyles; the BMW iX isn’t available as a sedan.

The Taycan is available in both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations. The iX doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.
